President’s Column
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
 
Welcome to the fall 2010 Edition of the AACIO Newsletter. Hopefully, after a hectic spring and summer, things are slowing down a little for you as we approach the holidays.
 
 I am pleased to report that your organization is getting stronger because of your involvement and I urge all of you to be even more actively involved by participating and by becoming members if you have not already done so. A record number of Fellows in training are joining the AACIO and that is indeed a very encouraging sign for the future of your Organization.
 
The March 2010 meeting in Atlanta was a huge success. The Scientific program featured talks on Syncope by Sanjiv Narayan, M.D., Ph.D., Hyponatremia by Alpesh Amin, M.D. and Srinivas Murali, M.D., and Anti-platelet therapy by Sanjay Kaul, M.D.. Dr Alpesh Amin was honored by AACIO. Three outstanding Young Investigators were presented awards. Young Investigators have shown an increasing interest in the YIA competition submitting several high-quality projects. 

Preparations for the November 14th meeting in Chicago are in full swing. Please refer to the www.aacio.org website for updates. Dr. Inder Anand will be the AACIO honoree in recognition for his extraordinary contributions to the field of Cardiology
 
I am pleased to report that our founding President, Dr. Navin Nanda recently received the Presidential Distinguished Physician Award from AAPI as well as the Melvin Marcus Award for his services as a Gifted Teacher from the International Academy of Cardiology. 
 
I would like to sincerely thank our Industry sponsors for supporting the AACIO Scientific Program and would like to especially thank St. Jude Medical for their strong support of the upcoming Chicago meeting.

AACIO Honorees
Inder S. Anand, MD, FRCP, FACC, D Phil (Oxon.)
 
Inder Anand received his undergraduate education in India, and postgraduate training at Oxford University, England where he was a Rhodes Scholar. At Oxford he received the D Phil degree (Ph.D.) in cardiovascular physiology. He later trained as a clinical cardiologist in London, and worked at a number of prestigious institutions like the UK Medical Research Council’s Clinical Research Center at Harrow, National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, and Kings College Hospital, London and was a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the National Heart and Lung Institute, London, UK. Thereafter he worked at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India, for 19 years where he made seminal contributions to our understanding of the pathophysiology of salt and water retention in patients with untreated heart and high altitude medicine and physiology.    After obtaining premature retirement from the PGI Chandigarh in 1991,  Dr. 
 
Anand moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he has been Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota and Director of the Heart Failure Program at the VA Medical Center.
 
Dr. Anand has authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications and over 600 abstracts. Besides his interest in clinical heart failure, he runs an active research laboratory working on the cellular and sub-cellular mechanisms of heart failure. He is also an acknowledged expert in the field of high altitude medicine and described two new syndromes; Infantile sub-acute mountain sickness and sub-acute adult mountain sickness that occur in people living at high altitudes. He also pioneered the use of inhaled nitric oxide in the management of high altitude pulmonary edema. He is Associate Editor of the Journal of Cardiac Failure and a member of the editorial board of several National and International Journals. He is also the treasurer of the Heart Failure Society of America and was senior advisor to the NHLBI. He has been a principal investigator in over 50 heart failure clinical trials, and a member of executive, steering and end-point committees of several international trials.


Charnjit Singh Pruthi, MD
 
Charnjit Singh Pruthi, MD, is a cardiologist at the BBC Heart Care-Pruthi Hospital in Jalandhar, Punjab, India.  He received his MBBS (1977) and his MD (Cardiology, 1982) from the Government Medical College in Amritsar.  He piloted the establishment of the Guru Nanak Mission Hospital, a charitable multi-specialty hospital.  He also established the Pruthi Hospital and the BBC Heart Care, both in Jalandhar, which pioneered in bringing total heart care to the northern part of North India.  Dr. Pruthi is in the process of starting a 300-bed multi-super specialty hospital in Jalandhar which is the “need of the hour”.
 
Dr. Pruthi is actively involved in providing heart care to socially deprived and rural populations in Punjab and neighboring states, providing regular free health 
 
services and screening camps in rural areas, conducting seminars for creating health and heart awareness and in 2007 he started the Rural Health Education Mission.  He also conducts vector and pollution control programs, hygiene awareness programs and is actively involved in creating and maintaining green areas in parks and roundabouts in rural areas.  Dr. Pruthi organizes continuing medical education programs, holds monthly medical workshops for physicians in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and in 1997 he organized the first conference of the Northern Chapter of the Cardiology Society of India.  Dr. Pruthi has received numerous recognitions from the Ministry of Defense, the Government of India for serving defense personnel and their families, Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, Northern Railway (Ferozpur, Ambala Division), Rail Coach Faculty and the Government of Punjab.


Memorium
Dr. Rajendra ‘Raja’ Dhurandhar passed away on October 18, 2010 in New Orleans.  Dr. Dhurandhar was a cardiologist in New Orleans, Louisiana who helped develop Touro Infirmary’s cardiology division.  Raja was a tremendous supporter of AACIO, served on the Board of Directors with distinction from the inception of AACIO and helped coordinate the AACIO bi-annual meetings when they were held in New Orleans.  He was a native on Bombay, earned his medical degree at the University of Bombay and came to New Orleans in 1965 to do his Cardiology Fellowship at Tulane School of Medicine.  He spent several years at Toronto General Hospital before returning to New Orleans in 1970 when he began his affiliation with Touro.  Dr. Dhurandhar was one of the first hospital based cardiologists in New Orleans and was responsible for bringing the cardiology department at Touro into the 20th century acquiring equipment to improve diagnostic skills including ultrasound and three-dimensional views of the heart.  He established coronary care and cardiac rehabilitation units.  Because of Dr. Dhurandhar’s experience studying bretylium tosylate (fights abnormal heartbeat) while in Canada, he was the first physician in the USA approved to use it before the FDA approved its use. The hospital honored Dr. Dhurandhar with the hospital’s highest honor, the Judah Touro Society Award, and the Touro Infirmary Foundation also established an award bearing his name which is given to a second-year cardiology resident.  In addition to his responsibilities at Touro, he also taught at both Tulane and LSU medical schools in New Orleans and in 2001, a cardiology professorship in his name was established at LSU Health Sciences Center.  He leaves his wife, Nina (retired Tulane University pathologist), two daughters, Sunita Dhurandhar (San Francisco), Dr. Anjali Dhurandhar (Denver), a brother, Jatindra Dhurandhar (Pune, India) and a sister, Sudha Gorakshakar (Boca Raton, Florida).


Member Honored
Navin C. Nanda, M.D., Founding President of AACIO, was awarded the President’s Distinguished Physician Award “for your extraordinary service and Dedication to our Profession” by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin at their annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on June 26, 2010.  This award was presented by Congressman Steny Hoyer, Majority Leader of the United States House of Representatives.
 
He also received the Melvin L. Marcus Memorial Award from the International Academy of Cardiology.  Dr. Asher Kimchi, Chairman of the Academy, together with Co-Chairmen Dr. Jeffrey S. Borer and Dr. John A. Elefteriades, headed a committee of 125 of the world’s top cardiologists and scientists that reviewed nominees from multiple countries and selected Dr. Nanda for The Melvin L. Marcus Memorial Award “for distinguished contributions as a Gifted Teacher in Cardiology”.  Presented at the 15th World Congress on Heart Disease – Annual Scientific Sessions 2010, Vancouver, BC, Canada, July 25, 2010.
